Dr. Jennifer Hughes graduated from the University of Cardiff, Wales (United Kingdom), in 2005 with a degree in medicine and surgery and a bachelor’s degree in Public Health. She worked as a junior doctor in a rural district hospital in South Africa before joining Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF, Doctors Without Borders), where she worked with local stakeholders to run the decentralised drug-resistant tuberculosis programme in Khayelitsha. She was involved in the early roll-out of bedaquiline and delamanid in South Africa and is still a member of the National Clinical Advisory Committee for management of DR-TB in the country.

Since 2017, Jennifer has been working as a research doctor at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC), under the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town. Her main research focus is the pharmacokinetics and safety of new drugs and optimised treatment regimens in children and pregnant women with drug-resistant TB.

The May TRAC Seminar Series is organized by Dr. Nicole Salazar-Austin and Dr. Ahizechukwu C. Eke through the Clinical Core and will focus on TB & Pregnancy.
