Dr. Neelima Navuluri is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Global Health in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care at Duke University School of Medicine and the Duke Global Health Institute. Her research focuses on the epidemiology of chronic lung diseases in resource-limited settings and the implementation of evidence-based interventions to improve respiratory health outcomes. She currently conducts studies on PTLD in Kenya and Uganda through the AMPATH Consortium and International Epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA).

Socio-economic impacts of TB – updates from the TB Sequel multi-country prospective observational cohort study

Denise Evans is a Principal Researcher at the Health of Economics and Epidemiology Research Office, a Division of the Wits Health Consortium at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has a joint appointment as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand. She has been at HE2RO for over 15 years and currently leads the TB Research portfolio at HE2RO. She has published over 140 peer-reviewed papers (Google Scholar H-index as of 35) and is an NRF C-rated scientist. She has been the PI on multiple large grants, several cluster randomized trials, and health economic evaluations for TB in South Africa and other countries. She has been leading the socio-economic research task of TB Sequel since 2016. Much of her research focuses on the bi-directional relationship between post-TB lung disease and economic, social, and psychological outcomes associated with TB.

A passionate activist, author, and speaker, he champions advocacy around person-centered TB care, mental health support, and survivor-led solutions to ensure those affected play a central role in driving change. He also serves on the Ethics Committee of the South African Medical Research Council.

Dr. Sara Auld is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology, and Global Health at Emory University. Before coming to Emory, she worked at the US CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the International TB Branch. In addition to her clinical work in pulmonary and critical care medicine, she conducts clinical and translational studies focused on the intersections between TB, HIV, and lung health, including post-TB lung disease.

Dr. Gupte is Assistant Professor of Global Health at Boston University. His research is focused on the intersection of infectious and chronic lung diseases in low- and middle-income settings. Dr. Gupte leads several NIH funded studies to describe the epidemiology and pathogenesis of lung injury in TB/HIV, measure its impact on poor clinical outcomes, and identify therapeutic and programmatic interventions to improve post-TB lung health and longevity.

Dr. Duarte is a physician-scientist from Brazil. Her research focuses on investigating tuberculosis and HIV among highly vulnerable populations, with an emphasis on systems epidemiology. Her Ph.D. research at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro utilized Brazil’s national TB database to explore the link between social vulnerability and TB treatment outcomes, identifying key strategies and populations for improving treatment success. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine at ZARNS School of Medicine, a postdoctoral fellow with the Regional Prospective Observational Research for Tuberculosis (RePORT) International, and a collaborating researcher at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) in Bahia.

Joowhan Sung is an infectious diseases physician who recently completed a clinical and research fellowship at Johns Hopkins and has joined its Division of Infectious Diseases as an Assistant Professor. Carrie Tudor has worked in global health for over 20 years on various global health projects throughout Asia and Africa. She earned a BSN and PhD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and a MPH from Emory University. Following her PhD, she completed a Fogarty Global Health Post-doctoral research fellowship at the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for TB and HIV (now the African Health Research Institute). Her research interests are focused on the occupational risk factors for TB among healthcare workers, airborne infection prevention and control, and preventing TB and other infections in healthcare workers.

Tudor is the TB Project Director for the International Council of Nurses working to build the capacity of nurses related to TB/MDR-TB and patient-centred care in China, the Russian Federation, and seven sub-Saharan African countries.
